A little something on the hook for longer than it should be

,,, and vintage crochet patterns.  I love vintage things, recipes, books etc, and I do love me some vintage crochet patterns, especially potholders. While I love doilies, and I do have a few, all but 1 or two are vintage. I have not made a doily in a while, but just can't pass up the potholder, I have this potholder thing going on. I am especially enamoured of the ones with the Irish Rose in the middle, and the dress ones....    I have seen a pattern around for some time, the pattern is by Anne Cabot, it is vintage and out of print. You can get the pattern, it isn't easy to find for a small fee.

If you are talented enough you can re create the potholder from the picture of others who have created this lovely. I'm between both of these, I found the patterns and ordered it, only to find it lacking in clear, concise directions.  I don't know if something was lost in the translation or what. But for the life of me I am having trouble with what appears to be a rather straightforward pattern. So I am relying part on the pattern, my own skill and analysis, and the picture. After a few weeks of trying to go solo with the pattern, I thought it was me, I was missing something, I made a few inquiries at Ravelry, and found that there were others also who, like me had a issue with the pattern.  I was comforted in knowing that I was not an inept crocheter, but in fact there were some missing pieces to the puzzle, the pattern became more like an algebra problem.  I'm on the umpteen start, and along the way it seems to be falling more in line with what it should be, but oh my. I like a challenge sometimes, and sometime I just like to breeze through and whip something up with my hook.

Here is the link to the Ravely posting about the potholder, I tried to insert a picture here but the blogger doesn't want to play nice.

that's what I'm doing, mine has a burgundy rose in the center, and I'm working on the white part now. If I get this done, I'll be back here with the finished product. Have you all ever run into this with the vintage patterns?
